refridgerating superworm, or have I got king mealworms?

gothra Jul 13, 2004 06:34 PM

Well, I put 2 supers in a small container and put that in the fridge (not freezer) to check that the supers I got are really supers and not those hormone mealies; I thawed it after 24 hours, only one was dead, the other one still moves a bit. Could they be supers? How long do you need to fridge them to do the superworm testing?

These supers are from my own colony, the beetles are large. If I happen to have king mealworms, will their colony be the same too? will their baby worm grow to the same size as supers too?

I don't really understand your post. Superworms ARE king mealworms aka kingworms. Giant mealworms look really different from superworms. You don't need to refrigerate-test them to tell them apart. Giants look just like normal mealworms but bigger. Superworms have black heads and a darker shell-color.

You also don't have to worry about giant mealworms being bad just because they've been hormone-treated. The hormone they're treated with is already present in normal mealworms. It's when the body stops producing this juvenile hormone (JH) that they pupate. So what people do to create giants is continue supplying JH so that instead of going onto the next stage, the mealworms pupate into an abnormally large larvae.

Hello

I'm not exactly sure what you are askin (my fault, not yours ) but supers are a lot bigger than the steroid-fed king mealies. Supers also have a greyish-brown black color, while king mealies have the same yellowey amber coloration of a normal mealworm. They are both completely different beetle species. And, last i knew, the whole reason why the big mealworms are so big is because they are fed a steriod to make them bigger, and it also prevents them from pupating (sp?) so they cant turn into beetles. If they turned into a large bettle i would say you have superworms. hope this helps!
