Breeding?

Bb7551 Jul 13, 2004 09:02 PM

I have had a bearded for about two years and have a friend who has a lot also, I have just discovered the difernet morphs and I want to know if breeding them is profitable? If so I will invest in a few leucistics, and hets, and start? I love these guys. I was going to do ball pythons, but, beardeds seem so much cooler to work with!

Thank you
John

Beardies are cool and fun to work with, so are balls though. Yes you can make money, or lose everything, it all depends on how you do it. DON'T do it for the money, that's the wrong reason to get into it and you'll just be disappointed.

j/k I know your what ya want to say

To the person who posted the question

First, there are no leucistic proven dragons yet, hence no hets.
Second, it is not profitable if you want to do it right until you have established a good reputation for producing quality animals in high demand.

Properly raising clutches to safe saleable size is a losing situation for several clutches or a few generations. AND THEN only if you have something that is in a high demand and prime for their species.

Many bearded dragon breeders have changed over to breeding boas and pythons due to the differences in the demand care and time between the two oppposed the sellability, with bottom line cost/profit a factor.

If you have dragons with good lines and traits, you might want to breed some when you have homes for them or friends/other people that know they want one and see how that goes first, its the best way to get the experience and really understand what is involved in it, without being in over your head and having to resort to wholesaling them off at a few weeks to get out.

If all you want to do is make money don't breed anything. If you love animals and want to take a shot at supporting your hobby and even make a few bucks on the side then breed the BP's.

There's a couple of reasons I'd go this route instead of beardies. First, you will not be nearly overwhelemed with a clutch of 8 BP's as you would be with 60 baby beardies. Secondly, if you buy het BP's your chances of making a profit are much, much better than with beardies, from what I understand.

Good luck!
