The live/prekilled debate has happened in every reptile forum I have been on. I have to say prekilled is easier ...and for tegus prekilled is supposed to keep them calmer (I have heard this from other people and breeders, not from personal experience). My tegus only eat things that do not move so the choice was easy 
How long have you had the tegu?
If it's very new find out what it was eating before you got it. Does he/she eat crickets or worms?
My aussie dragons were eating only live food and now hey will eat prekilled but it was a time training them to accept this.
