Suggestions for Spotted Turtle set up?

AUSSIE-DRAGON Jul 13, 2004 10:54 PM

I am looking for suggestions on set ups for hatchling spotted turtles. Looking for good substrates to use, how big of an enclosure for 3 hatchlings, how deep of a water area? Right now they are set up in rubbermaid tubs with reptisun 5.0's, and the general recommendations for keeping spotteds. I just want to see if there are any other things that I can do to give them a better habitat. Also, what are some good food items, as of right now they are eating reptomin, bloodworms, and small mealworms and guppies. I have been to almost all the main turtle sites and looked at other care information. But I am still looking for more info from people who keep them. Any suggestion would really help.

Thanks

Joel

Joel,

It sounds like you are doing everything you need to do. Two ideas: I don't believe 5.0's are vital for hatchlings.. I believe that might be too much for their eyes.. I use "plant" bulbs for the first 6-8 months. And since they are poor swimmers.. I have always kept my hatchlings in very shallow water - or - set it up so the gravel is sloped with a plateau where they can rest.. in water that is no more than an inch deep. They do like to bask.. spotteds are more terrestrial than you might think!
