Red Albino Black Rat Snake

DoorGunner Jul 13, 2004 11:44 PM

I was wondering if anyone could tell me if the red albino gene is co-dominant. The reason I ask is because I crossed a male red albino with a female white albino (see pic), which dropped only one good egg in her first clutch. The egg just hatched and out came a red albino. Now, either she's het for that gene or the male's trait is co-dominant. Or maybe.....

There are (at least) two incompatible bloodlines of Albinism & the original animals were bred to ea. other which means that the descendents from the original pairing could be Het. for ea. other. They have prob. been bred back & forth w/ ea. other on numerous occasions cause it can be difficult to determine which is which unless you have history on the bloodlines. I have seen "Red" (T ) Albinos that look like the "White" female. They have been called "Snows' & "Ghosts". I have also seen T- Albinos that look like this also - which was originally called the "White" strain. The babies (& adults) from ea. strain can be easily confused w/ ea. other.

Thanks much. I figured she was probably het for the red albino strain, but with only one hatchling to go by, I couldn't be sure. I have two or three good eggs from her unexpected second clutch. so I shall see what I shall see if they hatch okay. And you're right. It can be a very confusing business. I also like the hypo (or T albino) strain, as well. However, my favorites are the leucistics, but I doubt that they are pure obsoleta obsoleta. Thanks again.

Don't know. She has pink eyes and is almost patternless. I guess if she were T , she would have blue/black eyes like a leucy Texas rat, white-sided bull, etc. Her temperament is the best I've ever seen among the rat snake clan that I've come into contact with. She will perch in my hand like a boa and is very tolerant of handling. I was going to outcross her with a WC jet black male (see pic), but parasite issues kept me from putting them together. I was just surprised as all get out to see that little amel guy when I got back from a trip to Arizona. I thought they'd be producing double-het normals. Well, I got a white-phase male neonate earlier this year for her and was going to put them together next year, providing he'd be big enough to take her on.
