breeding question?!?

dmlove Jun 21, 2003 12:50 PM

Okay, well I have the male bearded dragon named Ralph, and my cousin has the female named Cheech. Well we were trying to breed them last week, but to no avail. This week my cousin is on vacation, so he let me have Cheech to try to breed again. (She never took). Well i put her in Ralph's cage, and like before, she would arm wave and slowly head bob. Ralph would head bob at her and mount. He grabbed the neck with his mouth, but never put his tail under her. While he was grabbing her neck, Cheech would head bob slowly and arm wave, and then move both her arms up and back like she was swimming, and then Ralph would let go. Then she would run some way away from him, and then slowly head bob and arm wave. and he would try again, and the same exact thing happened. This has happened for like 4 days now. Is this normal? Its like Ralph doesnt know how to mate with her, like he doesnt put his tail under hers. Its strange. Im just wondering if this is normal, or if i have some inexperienced dragons. LOL. About 15 minutes ago, Cheech was just laying on the bottom of the cage, looking tired. She wasnt basking like Ralph, so i took her out and put her in a spare cage, cause it looked like she was stressed out a little bit. Im gonna keep her in the seperate cage till tonight, or possibly tomorow (let her have some alone time for a while before she goes back with Ralph to try mating again.) (dont worry, we are really prepared for babies. We have Mercury Vapor bulbs, tons of UVB lights, plenty of 10 gallon tanks and 18 gall rubbermaid tubs ready, and have worked things out with a nearby vet so we can get some discounts on the vet visits. Well, any help would be appreciated.

Sounds to me like the female is just not ready for breeding. That arm swimming is her trying to get the male off of her back. Have you brumated the dragons this year? Exactly how old are they? Young dragons will go through the motions of breeding, and do the same yours are doing. I would give them more time. They might not be ready, no matter how ready we are. Give them time, and go easy on that female. Don't want her to stress out and get sick for our own enjoyment. Not worth it.

the male is a year and a half old, and the female is a year & 7 months old. She is about 16 inches long. The male is about 18 inches long. I seperated the female and the male, because i dont want to stress her out. When do you think i should try to put them back together? Thanks...

Some dragons will mate without it and some won't.
Mine had done the same thing yours are doing, until one day they finally did it.
All I can say, is they are not ready. It's your call but if they have not been brumated, it is possible you may be wasting your time. But that is not a rule with them so???

Good luck.
