Swollen Jaw update **pics**

Melisondra Jul 14, 2004 12:22 AM

I snapped some pictures tonight, unfortunately they are very blurry as my camera doesnt handle closeups well at all.. I outlined the swellings a bit in photoshop.
I also noticed tonight they were about the same size. But the one on his right side looked deflated a bit and was kinda squishy? I am going to call my vet tomorrow and ask if they would have any ideas (or even know about chameleons) if not ill try that site of Lele's vet look ups. Any ideas what might be causing this? *sigh* my poor baby...
Thanks all
Erin

Can't really tell from your pics. A couple of ideas. Is this a young veiled? Their jaws do get bulgy as they mature, so you might look at pics of adult males to compare (especially as this is on both sides). Edema often shows up more like a soft swelling all around the base of the neck sort of like a roll down sweater collar. The other possibility is an infection that started at the corner of the mouth. Is there any sore, discolored red gum, patchy cheesy stuff inside the mouth?

He is an older chameleon, pushing about 5-6 years now I believe. Im sorry the pictures are so bad, I wish my camera was better. I will try to find my other camera and get a better pic today. I dont know if it is anything to worry about but id like to be sure. It is two seperate swellings where it looks like his lymph(?) glands are on his throat. If they even have anything like that. gotta head to work unfortunately, will post again soon if I can.

Not to worry .I just went and took a good look at my male he's about 1 year old but I saw his jaw like that before. It's the muscle in his jaw some times it swells up if he's been eating a lot and working his jaw. This is my second big male and my other one had the same thing even bigger. So I would just keep your eye on it and give him a good feeding and see what it does. Then go from there. But I think he is ok not to worry. Im not a vet but I do have 16 different chameleons and alot of veilds and I've never seen any thing like that to be wrong with a male veild.........Scott....good luck.....
