It depends upon what species you want to get. D. leucomelas, glactonotus, most auratus and some of the thumbnails such as the imitators get along well in groups. I believe P. terribilis is also a good community frog, but have no first hand experience with these yet. If you purchase about four froglets, you have about an 80% chance of getting at least one pair, which you can separate later for breeding. D. azureus are best purchased as a sexed pair, as are the tinctorius. The females will fight and can do some real damage to each other. D. pumilios get along if there is a lot of space and territory where pairs of a group can't see each other, but do best in pairs. Imitator females will compete and fight, but seldom if ever do any damage to each other, and I've even bred them with some success in a group situation, although if you want quantity, the ladies do mess up each other's eggs. I think the D. galactonotus do best in groups--the more the merrier, as long as they have plenty of space. Although I have blue auratus, they have never bred, as I have all females from the original group of four. These get along together, though. They are pretty shy and one never sees them out and about as much as the others. I have four D. fantasticus froglets, but these are very shy fellows and not out of the nursery yet, so I have no idea how they will pair up or get along when they mature.
This is just my experience, which is fairly limited to just what I've mentioned.
