emergency: eggsack attached

reuben Jul 14, 2004 01:49 AM

Short story:
Baby's gut is open and egg yolk is hanging free. What to do?
Long story:
I had a clutch go bad on me and one egg remained semi-decent looking. This morning I found it slit open and the baby snake peeking out. There remained two wormy eggs attached to it and decided to try and remove them so that the worms did not attack the baby, In the process of cutting off the attached eggs, baby crawled out and onto my hand looking very healthy except for an open abdomen with the egg sack still hanging. I hope it's just the egg sack and not the intestines! I have her now in a clean (but not sterile) deli-cup and need advice on how to proceed. Can she be saved?

I borrowed this photo from ChaosCat's website:

If it looks like this, it's just the yolk sac and I've read that you can either leave the hatchling alone (on wet papertowels so the yolk doesn't dry up) and wait for the yolk to be absorbed (though risking eviceration if the yolk catches on something), or use sterile sissors and cut the yolk sac off as close as possible to the belly.

If there is a significant amount hanging out, it may indeed already have evicerated itself, if so, you need to get it to a vet or it will die. I tried to find a pic of an evicerated one for you but couldn't find one.

Good luck, either way.
