Thinking of getting a Green iggy some ?

leogecko16 Jul 14, 2004 03:50 AM

What would be the minimal size for a full grown green iguana but It would most likely be walking around in my room then staying in his cage but it would be supervised of course. And give me some good captive breeders web-sites that sell iguanas cheap.

instead of going to a breeder, y dont you adopt an older ig. their are sooooo many homeless iguanas out there. and if you adopt one from a rescue it would make room for them to save the lives of more igs. plus it would already be tamed witch believe me (because im going through it right now) tameing is a pain in the a$$. i rescued both my full growns and they are the sweetest animals in the world. but i have a baby and he is soooo mean. and it will take forever to get him to like me. but whatever you choose its up to you. the cage should be very big. with many shelfs and places for it to clime. there was a cage dicussion on this forum awhile ago and i saw some great cages. you should check them out. good luck with your new ig

I agree with adoption...sunshine is the BEST (albeit expensive). She was a rescue. i couldnt imagine our lives without her now (obviously...you can read my panicked posts below )

The minimum size for an adult ig?

Not sure what you mean by that... but I'll tackle it, anyway.

We are talking about green iguanas, right?

The average adult green iguana will reach 6ft from head to toe. Notice that's an average. Females are usually smaller than males, and since iguanas never stop growing, older animals could grow larger than 6ft. So I guess you could say 6ft was a minumum - although, again, I'd hesitate to use the word "minumum" since they never stop growing. Does that make sense?

If you're thinking you can keep it small by keeping it in a smaller cage, well... you can't. Undersized iguanas are iguanas who are fed an improper diet and kept under improper conditions. A properly cared for ig will reach it's adult potential no matter what size of cage you keep it in. But they require very large cages in order to be happy.

It's good you're doing your research before you buy. Good luck!

That's 6ft head to TAIL, not head to toe, lol.

Sorry what I meant to say was what the minimum size cage a full grown iguana should be housed in. Sorry about that.
