Leo substrate

throatoyster Jul 14, 2004 07:55 AM

What's the best substrate for adult Leo's? I'd like sand, but I know it can impact them... is there any kind of calcium type sand that is ok? No paper towels cause I want it to look nice. I'd also like to stay away from Repti-bark. Before I got a few of these guys I was primarily a snake keeper and I'm used to the convenience of just buying aspen in bulk and always having it around. Things like Repti-bark are just too expensive to do that with.
Thanks in advance,
-Will

hello, im currently using newspaper for my adults because its to much of a inconvience to clean because i have a preety large coloney and they pooh alot. But for one or two geckos i think its ok to use calci-sand which is made bye t-rex.

if your so concerned about looks, and would rather it look nice then the leos being safe, then you really shouldnt have a leo. if your goin to get a baby the only thing you really should keep them on is paper towls. leos come from clay rocky shelfs, that have a fine sand cover. in my enclosure i have half sand, and half clay tile. the sand is only as thick as the tile. this is the most natirual thing for them. the sand i use is zoo med Vita-sand. that is the only kind of sand that should be used. here is a pic of one of my 4 cages.

hope that helps
