what's in your collection???

daveb Jul 14, 2004 11:58 AM

so, what does everybody have these days? where is your collection plan headed? what are your breeding plans for this year and next year? whether you have one or 100, what do you have in the way of kings?

Dave B
currently:
1.2 normal brooks (normal only in genotype; excellent phenotype)
2.1 2x het for ghost
3.4 hypos- one flame, several hi orange and aberrant. Beard,Love,Krysko and Fengya origins
0.1 axanthic het hypo
1.2 ghost
1.2 white brooks (from Brandon Osborne's big whitie female)
1.0 eastern king Will Still line from Keith. an awesome crawling garbage can.

future acquisitions:
eastern kings
white sided brooks
who know what else will come up?!?!?

future breeding:
-hopefully find out method of inheritance with Brandon's white brooks. ( Brandon if you know please post)
-kind of like Rainer has done, possibly find new pattern/color traits within hypomelanistic brooks.
-cross the white side trait into high orange hypos, and ghost morph.
and of course there are always the pines...

Just keeping it to kings...

Not having a suitable partner I put my Brooks together with a Fla female that he mounted at least three times with no effect. I changed his name to DUD STUD.

My big King project is a pair of S. Florida Mole kings (the rarer twin spot form from Desoto County) I hope to breed in two years (though I have a friend who is producing litters now).

Here'e my list:

Brooksi
1.1 Flames het/poss. het hypo
1.0 Orange Hypo
1.1 N.E. Axanthic
2.0 Lemke Axanthic
1.2 White het Axanthic.....and Dave, I have no idea what the deal is with the Whites. I got my original female 10 years ago as a normal brooksi het for axanthic.
1.0 Extreme Orange Lavender
1.1 Extreme Sulphur Yellow
1.2 DH Ghost
0.1 Snow

Other King/Milks/Colubrids
1.1 Het Hypo Hondurans
1.3 Apalachicola Kings
2.2 Leucistic TX. Ratsnakes......and the biggest pr. I've ever seen.

Pythons
5.4.21 Green Tree Pythons
1.1 Het Pie Bald Ball Pythons
0.5 Normal Ball Pythons

Maybe soon we'll figure out the White gene in the brooksi. I didn't get that many eggs this year, but the youngsters will be ready for next year.......and that calls for breeding white to white.

Brandon-
do you remember if the het axanthism in big whitie was linked to a particular line ( Llemke/N.E.) or do you suspect it to be from another origin?

21gtp hatchlings? good work. looks like "God's favorite snakes" were good to you.
keep me informed on what your kings hatch out and when the cd is good to go.

Dave,

the het axanthism is linked to the Lemke line. I don't suspect it's anything other than a really nice normal brooksi color.

As far as the GTPs go, I didn't do too bad this year....other than one of my 3 year old females passing away for no simple reason at all. She was one of my favorite snakes that I had produced.......not to mention a super high yellow animal. This year has sucked. I hope it's going better for everyone else.

And the CD should be done soon..........hopefully. We've remixed it twice, and we're going back for a third time. I'm ready to finish it. It's been 5 months of headaches. I'll let you know when it's done.

Well Let's see....

Kingsnakes:

2.3.9 california kings. One of my female kings just escaped (discovered this morning when I went to see if she'd laid eggs) Another clutch is finishing hatching out with one baby still in the egg. I'll be posting pictures of the babies later on in the week after they shed. Next year I will breed all three females. This year I bred the escapee (who had 15 eggs that all died) and another one.

0.2 Apalachicola Kings. (the young one pictured below) My male died this year, I am currently saving up the money to get an '03 or older male to breed to my females next year.

(1).1 Arizona Mountain Kings. The male is only on breeding loan, though it didn't take this year. IF I keep the male through the spring I might get some hatchlings, otherwise I'll just continue to have the one beautiful female.

0.0.1 Splendida... purchased as an Eastern Chain ... If it's a female I will possibly cross her with my aberrant banded cal king male in the spring. If it's a male it will not be bred until/unless I get a female splendida.

1.2 Floridana... just little ones hatched in december '03.

--------------

Non Kingsnakes:

Current Corn collection:
1.0 Stripe het Amel
0.1 Stripe Anery
0.1 Hypo(?) het Amel
1.0 Hurricane Snow Motley
1.1 Anery
0.1 Amel/Creamsicle
Soon to be acquired and kept as the classroom pets:
1.0 Creamsicle
0.1 Normalsicle het for creamsicle

Cornsnake Plans for next year>... Stripe x Stripe, Snow x Hypo, Anery x Anery, Creamsicle x Normalsicle.

Also have:

1.0 Jurassic Milk... I plan to try to cross him to the amel/creamsicle corn.

and

1.3 Ball Pythons who may someday breed....

Wish List...

1. Find homes for those ball pythons. Too difficult & boring.
2. I would love a pair of Amazon Tree Boas
3. Male Appalachicola King
4. Pair of Mexican Black Kings
5. Female Jurassic Milk

Keith, I got them as yearlings recently from a dealer on kingsnake classifieds. He told me the breeder stated the parents were from the "Florida panhandle." Since I have no way to verify, I'll just list any offspring I produce from them in the future as non-locale.

Also I forgot earlier 1.0.1 Apalachicola kings

kenneth Jul 14, 2004 05:12 PM

Heres my short list of kings..............

1.1 Axanthic brooksi( Lemke stock)
1. het hypo brooksi( a big lonely guy lookin for love!)
1.1 cal kings
1.2 eastern chains( directly from Will Still... nice to live in the same city as him. And yes, his chains are amazing!)

Also...... balls, kenyan sands, rough scale sands, a beautiful hypo whitewater rosy, and a few other things.

I am cutting down the colubrid sde of the collection but the hethyp brooksi and trio of chains will remain. Hopefully, I can pair up the het hypo, and work on my own abberant chain next year! Ken

sullman Jul 14, 2004 05:40 PM

Lets see, I currently have:

0.1 - Anery Motley Corn Snake

0.0.1 - California King - Pretty sure it is male but didn't have it probed yet. Maybe I'll take a pic and someone could take a guess for me.

1.0 - Yellow Rat snake - This guy is out somewhere in my house. Been over a month. No trails in flour,no sheds,no skat,Nothing at all. I just ordered a 2003 yellow rat snake from Terry Parks.I'll be getting him on the 23rd. :D

I can tell by looking at a rat snake/corn snake what the sex of the snake is...but I have seen a few kings and can't tell them apart but like I said I am 'guessing' that mine is a male.

Snake_Charmer Jul 14, 2004 06:09 PM

I just spent 2 hrs watering my snakes. I'm too dizzy to remember 'em! Let's just say I have representatives from zonata, calligaster, getula, pyromelana, alterna, mexicana, triangulum, and ruthveni. Lots of "normals" and a few "morphs" of different ssp. Most are common in the hobby. I think I'm glad I'm having an off year production wise. It'll give my breeders AND me a break. Of course it means all the up and coming for next year will be just that more fun too.
Maybe some ghost hondurans, ghost FL kings, that kind of thing. Hoping to add to my zonata. Possibly more locality mole kings. Eastern king collection growing as we speak. Who knows? Should be fun!

1.0- Hypo Florida King (Brooksi)
0.1- Mexican Black
0.1- Knoblochi

Not really looking for anything now, but down the road, I'd like to get a reduced black Knoblochi, possibly another Hypo Brooks and/or Axanthic, and a Hypo or het/hypo Hondo.

It is a small list, I have limited available space or time.

1.1 albino easterns
0.2 het albino easterns
1.1 Maryland locality easterns (Piedmonts)
1.0 mexican black

Soon to arrive from Rainer
1.1 NE axanthic brooksi
1.1 Peanut Butter brooksi

And hopefully a couple of black/clear bellied easterns from Will Still. I want to try to determine the inheritance of that trait.

Next year I hope to produce albinos and hets from the above list. The Maryland female won't be old enough to breed next year so the big guy is available for hire Keith, Peter, Somebody...lol

One corn snake, but I've only been back in the hobby two weeks !

However I spent fifteen years as a kid and young adult wanting a king without ever getting one, so I imagine that my next snake might be one.

Now only if one would show up in my yard like he cornsnake did.....

3.5 Corn snake morphs

1.0 N.E. Axanthic Brooks King
0.0.1 Speckled King
1.1 Arizona Mountain Kings
1.2 Peruvian Redtail Boas

o.o Russell's Viper eh? Beautiful animals. Thought about getting one myself. Whats the temperament on him like?
-----
"Klaatu...Verata...Nicht--cough, cough, cough!"

DanW Jul 16, 2004 06:37 AM

The Russells was a real hothead at first. Every time he felt threatened he would hiss loud. It scares the livin daylights out of visitors and anyone not used to it. With age he settled down. Now he occasionally gets riled up. Rarely has he tried to bite. He rides a hook well and eats like a champ. But every once in a while is gets mad but has really been pretty easy to work with. Just don't get bit because this is about as bad as it gets.

Dan

Snake_Charmer Jul 16, 2004 03:25 PM

Just don't get bit because this is about as bad as it gets.

Yeah, I know! That's what's been keeping me from seriously looking into acquiring one as I have small kids in the house. I'm not huge into venomous. I don't have any hots right now but had timber rattlers and an albino forest cobra in the past, as well as a nice but badly scarred southern copperhead I rescued from the lawnmower, treated, kept, and then released him when we moved back up north. I really have an affinity for Copperheads and Lanceheads for some reason. Gaboons are gorgeous as well, and as previously stated I think Russells are beautiful. But I'm definitely a kingsnake gal at heart!
Thanks for the info
