Baby Feeding

wolfgirl591 Jul 14, 2004 01:46 PM

About how many small crickets will a hatchling alligator lizard eat per day? My eleven eggs are due to hatch in ten days and I want to be prepared with sufficient food for them. Cant hatchlings eat meal worms too or only crickets? I know that the adults like the worms but would they be too big for the babies?
Thanks for the help

Also, I am planning on putting all eleven babies in my 60 gal terrerium. Should I put the crickets right in that cage, will they be able to catch them? Do I need to take them out and feed them all individually?
Thanks again

Hello wolfgirl,

I would think it would be okay to keep the little guys together in the 60 gallon, providing of course, that none get too big and eat their siblings. It would probably be fine to feed them in the tank, however, watch them to make sure they all are eating a little bit. Sometimes hatchlings won't eat for days post-hatch. Once they grow bigger, you'll probably want to think about housing them individually, for obvious reasons.
It may ultimately be easier for you to house the kids individually, that way you can monitor each one's growth, habits, and just feel safer knowing that they're all eating.
Thats if you don't mind putting forth a few more dollars, and a lot more time into these babies. I think you have a good idea what to do though, as you seem pretty knowledgeable about these awesome lizards. You're almost there, keep on truckin', and soon you will have eleven bouncing, er, slithering little ones,
good luck with them.
