Help with tanning a snake skin

Langi Jul 14, 2004 02:22 PM

First let me explain that Im not some moron red neck who goes around shooting every snake I see to hang them on my wall. I found a dead snake and the markings on it are beautiful. The skin is in very good shape and I would like tp know how to tan it to keep it. I know that some of you with very beautiful and/or unusual markings, keep the skins when they die. Thank you for any and all help.

The member "JYohe" has done this, so if you need more info, try to find a post by him to email him, but this is what he told me in an email a long time ago:

"In a quick note... go to taxidermist...get stuff called one step "Snake tan"...follow directions.

Or...skin..scrape...dry...pin to board...apply 50% alcohol and 50% glycerine mix till it don't soak in anymore...a little everyday at a time..(brush on)...skin from bottom with scissors...start at vent.

Thawing...some I threw on floor, still in the bag...for a couple hours...then skinned still cold and almost partially froze still.  Some I threw bags on the floor(basement)...and the next afternoon when I remember them...I skinned them....LOL
Just let them thaw somewhere...don't use the warm water method"
