Yellow and Black Eastern Kingsnakes...

Keith Hillson May 14, 2003 10:14 AM

Does anybody know of anyone working with these ? Or does anybody know of a locality where these would occur ? I know Greenville SC has some yellowish Easterns but not a deep yellow. I know they exist Ive seen pics but have never seen any offered for sale. Any info would be appreciated.

When I was a little girl my family lived just outside a town called Shelby, in NC. There was a substantial amount of woods on our property, along with 2 great big horse pastures. I was quite the tomboy and used to run in the woods barefoot almost every day and came across almost every snake that lives in that area I'm sure...yes..I once stood on a young copperhead, but luckily I was light enough not to squash it and it went merrily on its way *eek*!
Now, other than the above mentioned incident there is one other snake that I remember vividly as a 'friend'. He (or she) was a BIG majestic kingsnake, jet black and bright yellow banded. I remember him so clearly as I saw him many many times over the 7 years we lived there. My Dad, although he hates snakes to this day, didn't and told me never to bother him as he was a 'good' snake, and we called him 'King George'. He was always poking around somewhere, around the foundation of the house, out in the woods closer to the house, sunning himself in the gravel driveway...I used to sit and watch him for hours, and slowly and quietly creep after him sometimes. I don't ever remember seeing him eating, but I remember seeing his bulging belly at times and finding his skins.
I believe this is what you may be looking for. My family lived in that area from about 1970-1982, and that was near Shelby, North Carolina. I could give you the address if you want.
The reason your post got my attention is because a few yaers later we lived in Spartanburg SC, about 10 mins away from Greenville. I know that area well too.
To this very day I think this is why I love kingsnakes so much =)

Keith,

This isn't yellow and black, but have you seen this pic of a snake from Berkeley county, SC? Neat looking king for a SC animal. Looks almost like a FL panhandle snake or a mosaic.

He has a few other pics of carolina kings on his web site as well, http://www.snakesandfrogs.com/scra/snakes/chain.htm, although none as interesting as that blotched thing.

that was from Oketee area. It was a wc adult male. I had a pair and the female died in hibernation. I decided I liked cal kings more and didn't know where to get another female from the same locale so I sold him rather than pair him up again. He went to a guy who used to live in SC and had caught many, he said it was the yellowest one he'd ever seen. I've posted pics before but the yellow doesn't show up well.
