long car trip need advice

SittonJ Jul 14, 2004 03:52 PM

I am going to be driving from Chicago to Las Cruces New Mexico the second week of August so it'll be hot. I have a year old corn and a leopard gecko. My car has functional a/c but will be sort of crowded with cages and boxes because I'm moving. It is a 2 day drive and we will be stopping 1 night. Some questions:
1)When should I stop feeding the snake? The gecko?
2)After the drive, when should i offer food again and resume handling?
3)During the drive, is it ok to keep them in small plastic cages with lots of air holes? I'll do my best to keep them out of direct sunlight. Any other suggestions? Will the a/c help keep them cool enough in the car?

I plan to take them out of the car when stopping for food and during the night so they don't suffocate. I've never transported herps so any advice would be helpful.
Thanks a ton.

first.....bag them both (each in their own bag...cloth)

then they go into a cooler or styrofoam box.......only a few air holes...not many

then...stop snake food a week ahead..and liz maybe a few days?.

give them fresh water alot prior to trip...

and....keep from too much AC and too much sun.......the windows magnify it......

......

they'll be fine.........

Dont worry about the ac freezing them out.Keep them cool and hydrated.Whatever your carrying them in just load it full of aspen to smooth out the ride. You dont need a gazillion holes in whatever your carrying them in.I would stop feeding your corn 2 weeks in advance.Your gecko I have no idea.I wouldnt worry about feeding the corn soon after moving. You have enough crap yourself to go through so make it easy on yourself.Just make sure it has water. My male corns go almost 3 months without food during hubba hubba season so dont worry about starving the little guy.Your leaving my favorite part of Illinios to go south?School?...Paul.
