thinking about getting a tort.. but have a few questions

mike d Jul 14, 2004 07:13 PM

first let me start off by saying i am not new to reptiles.. but i am a lizard owner.. i used to have a box turtle when i was little..

But i went to the zoo today and i fell in love with tortoises!!! and now i want one...

and i will be building a new enclosure for my iguana in about a month and he is only able to use the top half because he was abused and now he cant climb well.. so i am going to give him the top half and i wanted to put a tort on the bottom half.. the cage is going to look like this.. its a rough drawing of looking down from the top

and i was wondering if that area is big enough for a tort to live in and if it is what kind would be best..

Thanks for the help

while some torts have environmental and dietary requirements really similar to iguanas, i think that some people don't think it's wise to mix species like that...

*looks for an ej reply!*

i suppose that's because either through aggression or spreading possible diseases/parasites, they can harm each other. if you had a sort of separation between the top and bottom, though, it might could work, if your iguana's not really able to climb around anymore...

they wont be in the same cage...

the top and bottom are seperate... sorry that i didnt post that..

my iguana cant climb so my vet and i came to teh conclusion to build him a cage off of teh ground so he feels high up.. but i dont want a big empty space under the cage. so i would like to get a tort to put in the bottom half

but would that be enough area for a tort? i like the leopards but im not sure if that is enough space for one... and red foots and cherry heads as well... i want to get one that has some color...

also it will have lots of time to roam in my room and outside when the weather is nice..

... i'm sure thoughts and opinions vary, but i think that you have more than enough space for, say, a redfoot (i'm partial to them!). they don't get too huge (i read that the largest one on record was 17.75", but they're usually more like a foot or a bit more than a foot i think). leopards i read are usually 16-18" but can be more than 2 feet, so one of those would probably need bigger housing eventually. also, redfoots have humidity, temperature, and dietary needs very similar to iguanas, so that would be convenient. i don't know much about leopards' needs, but maybe someone else here can help with that... otherwise, try searching yahoo or google and you can probably find lots of info!

These are well suited for indoor care. That space you have could hold 2 to 4 easily for their entire life.
Leopards are rough to keep indoors and do get pretty big as do RFs.
