Green frogs, rana clamitans - see em, don't hear em!

kimhotep May 14, 2003 10:22 AM

The greenies are back in the backyard pond/ditch. I've seen two (I think - do they change from green to brown with temperature?)

Anyway it's been nearly a week since I've seen em, but I've not heard them calling yet. Is it too cold for egg-laying here in central MA, or what?

In other news, my wood frog tads are doing well, all have got little back legs with visible toes. PRECIOUS! They're just starting to waggle them independently from time to time.

& for the record, I REALLY REALLY HATE black flies.

The cold winter has many amphibians calling later than in previous years. I would say they are about three weeks behind.
Be patient they will start soon!

hmm.. here around DC green frogs have been out and about for at least a month and some have begun calling now. I have not seen any eggs as of yet. Gray treefrogs have been calling practically non-stop for the last 2 weeks. I have a couple wood frog taddies which have developed their back legs now (they are my clean up crew for my salamander nursery). My spotted salamander larvae hatched 3 weeks ago and are growing like weeds...out of the 60 I've lost only one so far. I might loose maybe 5 more as they are quite the runty things compared to the others. I also found a couple of just hatched spring peeper tadpoles last week and found a few early laid red-spotted newt eggs which have been developing quite nicely..should be hatching soon. My marbled salamanders larvae finally metamorphed this past weekend.

Wow, sounds like you described our back yard/woods. I saw about 10 green frogs in the koi pond wednesday, but heard none. While walking in the woods to release a captured/photoed spring salamander back into its home, we found a little 2'inch green in an unusual setting; by a creek in the woods. I usually see them in ponds, yeah, but in the forest? Does he think he is a wood frog?
Don't worry, pretty soon we'll hear the "bonk, bonk" of th greens. hey my wood frog tads are doing great too, really hardy little guys. One or two are really big, almost 2 inches!

Greens can be opportunistic. It is not unusual for me to find greens living around creeks in the woods well away from lakes/ponds/swamps.
