question on a soaking blood

MikeT Jul 14, 2004 10:58 PM

I just got a new one year old blood (supposed sarawak), and I've been finding him in his water dish the last few days. Just wondering how normal this is as I never see any of my other snakes soaking. His set-up is basic: temps are in the 80's, kept in a rubbermaid with papertowel substrate, and a hide. I've not yet set him up with a heat mat hot spot.
Thanks for any input.
Mike

Hey,
High humidity or not, if given a large water bowl, they will choose to soak. They have their moments when they soak for long periods at a time and then go for long periods where they don't. And in my experience with soakers, I've not found them to be adversely affected by it. So whose to say otherwise if they are soaking too much, or not. If you don't see or notice any unusual skin blistering from soaking or any other adverse affect that might be attributable to soaking, then I wouldn't worry about it; they are doing what comes natural to bloods and short-tails.

Even with a small bowl, the red female is attempting to squeeze her self into her water bowl. The black female, Negrita, obviously has a larger water bowl, and fits in it quite nicely, much to the chagrin of her red-blood counterpart.

My nearly 2yo SST soaks a lot and I figure it is normal. He is healthy and sort of has a pattern of soaking. He eats and goes into the hot(90s), humid hide for a few days, then he comes out and may go into the cooler back of the cage or come to the front and soak. Then he eats again. I don't worry about it, keep the water clean and check him for problems.
