ABDOMENAL PROTRUSION IN MALE CRESTIE

alexcr1 Jul 15, 2004 12:12 AM

HELP!!!!! PLEASE HELP ME!!! I was changing my cresties food when I noticed that my male was on top of the female, biting her head and that a curved pink fleshy part of him was hanging from between his legs above his hemipenal pouch, toward his abdomen. His pouch is not deflated so I fear it's something from his abdomen. I have subsequently separated him and the female (whom pesters him) and put him in a moist environment on moist paper towel with food and water. The flesh moves when he flinches and it is not bleeding. I fear that the skin will cauterize the flesh quickly and that he is in a great deal of pain. He doesn't appear to act different other than he licks it occassionally.

Is there anything I can do to help him?
THANK YOU,
STEPHANIE

is it an abdominal protrusion? or are you sure its not the hemipenes? they should come from right about the same area as the vent. they will come out when mating, and it sounds like you may have interrupted them. if thats the case, it should just go away, unless by some chance you injured it in separating them.

The male was biting the female and was on top of her, hence I think they were mating and I so rudely interrupted. How long should I expect it to take for the hemipenes to return to its rightful place?

If the hemipenes have not yet been retracted, you may have to take him to the vet to have them reinserted. If this is the case, make a paste of sugar and water and put it on the hemipenes so that they don't dry out.

Hindsight is always 20/20, but this is why you should never interrupt mating.
