smaller monitors??

mike d Jul 15, 2004 09:31 AM

in a month after i build a new enclosure for my iguana i will have an extra 8 foot long 4 foot wide and 4 foot high cage empty in my room. and i was thinking about getting a smaller monitor(s) to put in there...

it doesnt really matter to me if they can be handled but it would be a plus... also are there any that some from tropical habitats that need high humidity? that way i can use the old misting system from my iguanas cage?

It has the space to handle a mangrove. Monitors have requirements that iguanas do not (and vice versa), though, so a generic cage size does not always imply suitability.

Dont get an ackie if someone tells you they are great. I have had five years experience with monitors. this is my collection
1.0.1 water monitors
1.0.1 nile monitors
1.0.0 green tree monitor
1.1.2 roughneck monitors
1.1.2 red ackies
1.1.1 ionides
1.0.0 white throat

Out of them all the water monitors are the true joys of my collection, but for your enclosure they are too big

ackies have attention problems they like alot of it usually and they wont do that great in an environment so much bigger than them.

ionides get big too but they are GREAT monitors. Pro exotics sold me mine, they are wonderful.

You could get a timor monitor which is a nice small/med monitor, low cost, time consuming but worth it, and good personalities. i have had two a gold spot and a blue spot, they have little difference the blue looks cooler though. they are wonderful creatures and much better than ackies. get a timor, lol its just the right thing to do.

thanks for the info.. i was looking into timors before but people told me that they were not friendly at all...

also does it make a difference if the cage starts at the floor and goes up four feet? or do timors like to be high up..

and do you have any pics of any of your setup for the timors?

Some timors have been known to be outcasts, its in there genes, they are a relatively new specimen to the species. A cage that big would be great for two, if you put one in there it would be more likely to be friendly, they require there space and they require regular handling weekly. They can be tremendously successfull companions, they are very cautious and skitty so dont come from directly above its head to pick it up, they are like small iguanas in this sence, ease them up from under and they will climb on you to a comfortable warm spot and sit then you can hanlde them, they tame down quickly and easily. be sure to have live crickets fed to them they love the chase. never handle the first day after purchase or shipping. offer food the next day too and work on a schedule from there on.

The Funky shaped one is your best choice, but both are good sizes and your timors or w/e monitor you choose will enjoy either if set up right.

Savannah Monitors
Sand Monitors
Mangroves would be great too
Bluetails are a perfect choice as well
Roughneck Monitors

and besides a juvinille water monitor

nothing else that would be inexpensive *under 500 dollars

OMG

I feel bad now

I didn't even Mention my argus monitor

If the cage you have is at least five feet or four feet actually tall you can have an argus

They are great monitors

Besides my precious waters and niles they are the best and funniest little guys you'll see

they are fun pets

To become a handling pet. But my 6year old "squirt", gave him to a good friend, is doing great with his new mate also, hes typical of a timor, he dislikes handling at all.

Maybe they use the board and duct tape method Frank was talking about. lol

An ackie colony would be a blast. The more room they have (as adults, start babies in a small enclosure) the more entertaining they are. They love to dig, tunnel, climb and are friendly and inquisitive. Timors are not known to be friendly, and a lot of the more experienced people say if your timor is happy in its' environment you won't see it. You could also get black heads, freckled, sand, kimberlies, pilbaras, depending on what you want to invest and the type of personality you are looking for. I have 6 ackies and a storrs and the yellow ackies are the most friendly. Good luck!

I keep my argus monitors in 8' x 4' enclosures, one of which is 4' tall, the other is 2' tall. Just realize that argus monitors are reptilian bulldozers, and really appreciate a deep dirt substrate to make burrows in. Here's a link that has some pictures of my enclosures:

Also here, for general argus info

The same sized cage would probably work just as well for other mid sized monitors, assuming it is set up to meet all the needs of a monitor lizard. You could also keep dwarf monitors in a cage of that size, as well.

argus monitors look cool but i think i am going to end up building the corner cage so the cage will basically end up being a 5' square.. and i dont think that is enough area for an argus monitor..

Would a dumeril monitor be able to live in a cage like this.. it would be on teh bottom level and the cage is basically a 5 foot square with on edge at an angle.

also would a mangrove work in a cage like this? i just want to keep all posiblities open at this point.. and if people could please post pics of there monitors and there setups if possible..
(dont mind the colors)

thanks mike
