Can I mix in a 50 gallon

Sillygirl Jul 15, 2004 09:39 AM

I have a 50 gallon hex I am building that's going to be complete with false bottom, waterfall, small pond, etc. (I'll post pictures when I'm done). Needless to say it's one of my boldest, most creative projects to date in regards to terrariums. I wanted to add 3 of my Cobalt Tincs that are 2 unsexed juvies (I believe male and female close to adult) and an adult female) and possibly 3 of my azureus WHEN they get big enough. There would be lots of plants, broms, and hiding places as well as vertical and horzintal space for them to stake out their territory and of course I would not be raising any eggs that come from the tank. Could I pull this off if I kept a close eye on them for any fighting or stress? Is fifty gallons enough for 6 frogs? Or should just go and buy my 4 Amazonian milk frogs and leave my PDF in their respective 10 gallons?

I wouldn't mix tincs and azureus at all, but since I've never done it, am only going by their tendency to be territorial and battle. Azureus get along best in mated pairs, and not as groups, whether your intention is to breed or not. I personally, wouldn't mix any two species, but from observation, adult D. galactonotus, which get along well in groups, and D. imitators might get along together. When young, the galacs will utilize the bromeliads, but when they get older and heavier, they stay pretty much on the ground except to use some high branches when hunting. Imitators may also use the ground occasionally for female gladiator battles, but usually stick to the higher reaches and climb the glass a lot. A 50 gallon hexagonal really isn't all that much space for frogs that tend to stay on the ground. The tall hexagonal tanks are great for single species thumbnails, however.

I got to thinking about the territorial thing too and my 50 gallon turned out to be a 35 gallon when measured (whoops so much for going by what they said at the garage sale ) and the way the design is turning out there isn't going to be as much ground space to play with as I first thought. I think I'll stick to either a pair of tincs or azureus or at most a trio with two males. Still, in thought, the idea would look stunning with the two mixed in a tank but it's not worth the stress to the frogs.

I agree that mixing these two species isn't a good idea. A 50 gal. hex is plenty of room for 4-6 PDFs if you stack slate or similar flat rock creating a stair effect. Make sure all sharp edges are flattened. If you want to use milk frogs then great, but if you want PDFs that work well in groups, go with Dendrobates Leucomelas. They are forgiving, easy to care for, do well in groups if enough space is given, and are relatively inexpensive. Hope this helps!
