few questions

mike d Jul 15, 2004 11:03 AM

i am just wondering a few things about chams...

i will have an 8 foot long 4 foot wide and 4 foot tall cage free in a month when i am done building my iguana cage or a cage like the one pictured below but it will still be 4 feet tall.. my iguana will be in the cage above this one so this one will be close to the floor the iguana and cham will not be able to get near each other there will be a floor seperating the two.. but could i put a cham in there?

if so what should i do with the front of the cage? i have heard that glass is bad and i have heard that it is find to use glass on the front of the cage as long as there are vents in teh cage to get airflow. with this cage will have.. so could i do a glass front on the cage?

also what would be the best cham to put in a cage this size?

and i have heard differnt things about kepping chams together.. some say yes and some say no.. just wondering which one it is

also which cage would be better the one below or one that is 8 feet long 4 feet wide both cages will be 4 feet tall..

thanks for reading and responding

Is this a wire cage? If so ventilation is not the problem. Glass can stress chams because they see their reflection in the glass and constantly try to display to get rid of the rival. They also spend hours pawing at it to try and get through it. Chams don't like to be low down to the ground either. An ig on top would probably stress the cham with its movements (vibrations and sounds), and the temp requirements of the ig may make the cham cage too warm. Also, chams prefer a vertically oriented cage because they get security from climbing up higher, they require more of a temp and humidity gradient that vertical cages offer, and the plants they live in will need the vertical growing room. It's a nice sized space, but may not work very well for a cham. I'd suggest uromastix or beardies instead.

how high should the cage be?

and if i made the cage like the one that i posted.. that big brown shape.. the front part(with no dimesions on it) of it would be screen and the rest would be solid.

The cage height should be 4-5 feet. Taller is almost always better (both to give the plants room to grow and for the cham's security) and you will find keeping a gradient of temp and humidity easier in a taller cage. In your cage idea where would you mount the basking and UVB lighting? They would probably have to be mounted inside the cage so you will need to be very careful that the cham can't get too close to the hot bulbs. They do burn themselves fairly often.

all of the lighting in the cage would be resest in the top with wire blocking them off.

but i think i am going to get a monitor because the caging that i ahve wont work for a cham because it is to low to the floor.. or would i work because the cage would be 4 feet tall?

Based on your description of the cage I think a monitor is a much better idea. It would really suit it more in terms of horizontal space versus vertical.
