Keeping the birds out

cod6545 Jul 15, 2004 11:54 AM

Hey guys- does anyone know a way to keep storks and herons out of my 125 gallon pond? I'm losing turtle after turtle. Fishing line strung across the pond was recommended to me and for a while it worked. This morning, though when I went to check on my pond 5 RES were gone along with a beautiful goldfish. What can I do? Completely covering the pond isn't an option for various reasons. Thanks! Brooks

Pellet gun? j/k. I've heard tying strips of aluminum foil on stakes helps to keep those guys out. Both the noise in the wind and the shiny color are supposed to be scary. What might be happening overnight is you are feeding the racoons. In that case, many people but traps out to nab the varmin near the pond.

Don't shoot birds (or suggest it)!! Most birds including herons are protected by federal law! Besides that doesn't take care of the problem. More birds keep coming. You can rig up something to cover the pond with like bird netting. If indeed it is raccoons at night, a more substantial cover like wire is necessary. Build a pen around the pond and put a wire top on it. Keep asking around and do an internet search to get suggestions and to find photos. Put this question at the pond forum and see if those folks have any more ideas.
