Giving my king an Anole a bad idea ?

svtsinister Jul 15, 2004 01:19 PM

I feed me eastern king frozen pinkies thawed out. I once gave him a live pinkie and everytime he struck at the pinkie he missed..lol...Anyway, i was wondering if i could through an anole (catch them in my patio) in there for some practice. I know that they might have parasites but how bad is that really for my snake? I would really like to do this but i dont wanna put my snake in any danger.

If you want to feed your king an anole freeze it for at least a week. I really see no reason to feed your snake an anole if it is eatting f/t mice.

Not only possible parasites, but pestacides. The anoels eat bugs that could be infected with pestcides, the you could pass that on to your snake. Couple times during the summer a truck comes through my area spraying for moseqtoes (can't spell it). I would never bring anything from the outside to feed any of my snakes. Mice are better anyway.

BTW anoles dont eat bugs infected with incenticides.unless its a $hitty pesticide
they are a lizard that likes LIVE. Well anyhow back to the ? i have never found ill or contamination from feeding anoles from MY AREA. but i generally feed mice . i have experimented a few times w/ no ill effects.Btw a adult male anole (Brown)kicks snake a$$ on a yearling they dont want to get eatten. and my snakes have given up after an encounter with a male. and they scramble and fly (when you open the box)the lizard im talking about. any who its bedtime L8r Chris...........

We all know anoles eat LIVE insects! Not all insecticides/pesticides will kill the insects right away. Some take days to kill the insects. The insects will be poisoned and become less alert and have slower movement before death. These insects are easy pickings for hungry lizards who then injest the insecticides/pesticides that were on/inside the insects.
Now if you know there are no pesticides in your area that risk is reduced but a lot of areas spray for mosquitos now because of west nile.

Anyway I have NEVER seen an adult brown/green anole able to fight off a yearling snake. I am sure it is possible but I have never personally seen it. I had a WC hatchling black rat some years ago that would only accept anoles. I tried for weeks to shift him to pinkies but he just wouldn't budge until he was a little older.(anole scented pinkie parts helped) Now this guy was only 12-14 inches long and would tear adult male anoles up. They would fight him back and throat fan before he approched him sure but the snake always won quickly. Once that snake was around that anole it was always over. The anole would clamp on to him for dear life but never won.
