questions on feeding

herps Jul 15, 2004 07:14 PM

I have a 3 and a half to 4 foot long iguana which i have had for about six years now and i have been reading more things about them and i was wondering if anyone knew if it is ok for them to eat cooked chicken or if it will lead to an early death. and also if anyone can give any good feeding tips that will help my iguana live to be around 18 years old or more.

Chicken will cause renal failure in igs...their systems are not geared to animal protein and it causes premature death...dark leafy greens (collard, mustard, dandelion, escarole, chicory) along with mixed veggies( green beans, squash, etc ) minimal fruit is a diet that will prolong life and proper temps 90 to 95 basking and low to mid 80s in cooler zones...and proper uvb lighting (reptisun or iguana light 5.0 by zoomed) and a huge cage or free roaming situation will give you an ig that will live 15 to 25 yrs....good luck...Lyn
