Can my tortoise over eat on grasses?

cdgardner Jul 15, 2004 08:27 PM

I have built my yearling sulcata an outdoor pen where he can graze on the grasses that I have planted for the majority of the day. My problem is that he seems to be eating a lot! It seems everytime I go out there he is eating. Can he over eat on just grass? I have bermuda and meadow mix out there.
Also he has some cuttlebone in there and really likes to bite at it. Can he over do it with this as well. Even though he does look cute with a white little nose, I don't want him to get too much calcium. Thanks for any help.

No on all counts. Grasses mostly pass straight through unless they run it through again.
Cuttlebone is calcium carbonate which the body will only use what it needs and pass the rest.
