HELP! Leo just hatched out of egg but his GUTS are hanging out!!!

cv768 Jul 16, 2004 08:37 AM

This is the first time I've ever seen this!

He hatched and his guts are hanging out...I didn't want him to get infected of anything so I got him out of the vermiculite and onto some tinfoil in a small container. I got him gently into a little saucer of water to get most of the vermiculite off.

Will he absorb his insides or could they be too damaged??? What the heck happened??!?!

Are they hanging out of the vent (the opening where the poop)? If not, that is just the egg yolk being absorbed. Which is what I'm guessing is what you are seeing. Don't panic, all hatchlings have part of the egg yolk attached , it is what they are living in until they can get food. Make sure your gecko has a moist hide & watch the temps. Also don't bother to try to feed him/her until it sheds. Sometimes they won't eat for the 1st week or so. Good luck.

Well, it's definitley not coming out of the vent...I'll try to describe it the best I can...

It is a fleshy looking ball which seems to be attached to the insides of the geckos body...there is a small hole in the gecko (above the vent...probably in the belly region) which allows this ball to be attached...

I'm not sure...it just doesn't seem normal...we've hatched 5 others this year and haven't seen anything like this.

Thats just the yolk.. get him off the tinfoil and onto moist papertowels...That remaining yolk sac will dry up and fall off or be fully absorbed and that slit will be gone within 24 hrs...

hello. i have had the same thing happen. it was just the yolk sack. the other leos i've hatched, i either didn't see their belly becaus ei just left them in the incubator for a week, or when i did see it, it looked like he swallowed something huge and just had a huge belly. sure enough within a week it was absorbed so i know it was his yolk sack. i'm not sure though why some leos have their yolk internally, while others have it externallly.
