Two lights or one?

AtelerixMel Jul 16, 2004 10:42 AM

For a 4' tall cage, which would you recommend:
a ReptiSun fluorescent and a basking lamp, or an all-in-one bulb such as PowerSun? I've read that the ReptiSun UVs only penetrate a small distance, like less than a foot, and for a large cage, PowerSun (or something similar) would be better. But then I have also read that the PowerSun gives off too much UV rays and can be unsafe for both pet and keeper.

Your advice is much appreciated.

For all of my 4' tall cages I either use a powersun or two reptisuns, one won't provide much light in a cage that size. I prefer the powersuns because any trees or plants I have in the enclosure do a lot better than with just fluorescents. Hope this helps

Thanks. I think I will use the PowerSun. Do you know the cheapest place to get one of these, or maybe another brand that is a little less expensive but the same in quality?

I'd try either Big Apple or LLL Reptile, AAA has them too but I cant find how much they charge for shipping.

I don't think the PowerSun can actually produce too much UV, but they do produce a lot more heat and can burn. Also, if the bulbs get sprayed with even a little water they can explode. ReptiSuns are safer for these reasons and you can place them near the basking light so the cham does get close enough. The distance thing is fairly easy to deal with. If you have montane species the ReptiSuns are a safer choice. I haven't used PowerSun type bulbs as my chams are mostly montane and they don't really want the extra heat.
