Any Luck with 50% hets?

zhenchok Jul 16, 2004 10:58 AM

I just wanted to get some feedback on people's efforts of trying to breed possible hets. I'm debating on buying two carmel males, I just love carmels. My only concern is that I already have too many snakes to feed, 13, and don't need any more males, especially if they turn out to be just normals. I understand that this is all a gamble but wanted to see what others experiences have been. Thanks, Dave.

Last year I bred a 66% chance het albino male to a 50% chance het albino female and two of the eggs had albinos.

Possible hets work best for people who have more space and time than money. If taking care of 13 balls is a problem maybe adding two possible het projects wouldn't work well for you. You would probably want to keep back at least 3 or 4 girls from each male so we are talking adding 8 - 10 animals to your collection by the time you have a shot at producing caramels. However, if you don't have the money to buy a pair of 100% hets then possible hets would be a way to at least have a shot, but with a lot of work.

I started breeding my high end pieds w/ 50% het males I obtained from Peter Kahl. They were holdback animnals form a reputable breeder so I hd confidence when I bought 6 I would eventually score. I held back all of the females produced and within 5 years had produced SNOWFLAKE, my first pied. I have since produced 3 pieds and have proven out two hets formthe original 50% PH males. It is well worth it but is very time comsuming and the odds are only in your favor if you breed at least 2 males and keep ALL of the females for breeding to a KNOWN het. Alan Bosch
