few caging questions regarding dumerils and mangrove

mike d Jul 16, 2004 02:12 PM

in a month or two i may be getting either a dumerils monitor or a mangrove monitor but i have found it hard to find.. i have heard from other people that dumerils monitors are tameable. but what about a mangrove monitor?

also my cage will be 8 feet long 4 feet wide and 4 feet tall.. What is the best way to set it up. will live plants work in the cage? because they would help to keep up humidity and look nice. i dont know if any of you get the reptiles magazine but if you do would a setup like the one on page 80 of the January 2004 issue work? And how much ventilation would i want in the cage?

thanks and sorry for all of the dumb questions.

Both of those monitors are great. I prefer the mangrove, they have nice tempermants. They like to climb more than most. You probably want a mangrove if you've got a cage as tall as that. its best to set it up four feet tall. Eight feet long. Four feet wide. Set it up with fake plants. Most monitors burrow and your live plants will be history.

what does everyone here use for substartes?

i know i used to use cypress mulch for my tegu.. he could dig under it and it would hold the moister very well and was easy to clean...

would live plants bother the monitor if i kept them in teh post when i put them in the cage? i want the cage to look as natural as possible in the cage...

plus it will provide hiding and climbing places for the monitor that i choose. but which ever one i choose will be from a tropical habitat..

You CAN use live plants. But eventually this will happen, they will be torn up. If you have crickets or mealworms they will eat the plant eventually. Eventually somehow yout plants will die

also do you know of a site that ic an go on that will tell me the adult size of the dumerils and mangrove monitors? as well as having pics of the adults? i know what an adult dumerils looks like and tehy are kind of plain but do the mangrove monitors hold on to the yellow spots as they mature? ot do they lose them..

Sorry for all of the questions

This is a picture of scooter, he belonged to a lady named Holly who used to post here.
He was well over 5 foot.
I recommend reading the forums for a while, you will get a sense of who to take advice from and who not too.
There have been a lot of "who not too's" here lately.

Dumeril's are still my favorite monitor, but they can also get close to 5 foot. While some are docile, I have had a few that would rather bite you than look at you.
Just like any other species.

"plus it will provide hiding and climbing places for the monitor that i choose. but which ever one i choose will be from a tropical habitat.."
That you choose? I wish my monitors would cooperate like that. I try to give them lots of options. "They" choose what to use, not me.
