To get a BP?

LizardLuva Jul 16, 2004 07:28 PM

soon i will get a new aquarium...i dunno how big, but probably the 20-30 gallon range. Now im looking for a snake to put inside this tank. It would be prefered to be able to handle and/or not darty. I also would like this snake to be 100$ for a nice quality (captive bred) , not a farmed captive.

Originally i thought a BP would be good for me (and also i used a trick to let me have one, cuz my mom was cautious about mice in the freezer, so i asked for a new dog, and acted very deeply and used lots of reasons why, she said no, and said "why dont you get one of those snakes, ill let you do that mice thing in the container in the freezer

'So all i have to do is save up some money for the new tank (i have a temporary ten gallon to use...) and supplies, then i will go to a local expo and pick up a beautiful normal'

Thats the plan, what do u guys think?

-Nic

P.S. Any comments, advice, or questions? i am willing to get all the knowledge and help i can get.

What if your BP won't eat frozen/thawed.....will she be okay with live mice? BPs are known for being a bit stubborn to switch and a lot never do - and then there's the 'going off feed' problem. Make sure you (and mom) can handle that and are willing to deal with that.

I would probably first ask at the expo to see the breeder to feed the snake f/t...before i would consider buying it...

I've never heard of a breeder at a show doing this. They don't exactly bring food to the show to feed their snakes while there. And they don't really want to feed it and then you don't buy it and they're left with a snake they can't let anyone hold because it's just eaten. You can usually ask a petstore to let you see them feed (but I think it's better to buy from a breeder - besides bps at petstores are likely to be wild caught). It also seems most breeders feed their snakes live - a lot say it's easier to feed their large collection live as opposed to f/t. So it may basically boil down to you finding a breeder that says they feed f/t and you having to decide whether you trust them or not - and if it turns out not to be true dealing with it.

Not trying to be discouraging, just getting you thinking.

CB , even if eating live, is almost always better than WC when dealing with BPs.
I say find one you like, CB of course, then give it a week to acclimate to it's new home before attempting a thawed item.
In the meantime, be ready to save any stools it may produce in order to get a fecal done. (zip lock baggy, save in fridge not freezer if needed)
I have only had one BP refuse anything but live and I suspect it was a WC specimen.
Let us know what you get and how it goes

that ate FT from the first day and a CB that only eats live.
Don't think because it is CB that you can get it to eat FT right away. I have been able to switch some to FT but my gerbil hates the process. I rub the thawed mouse on him so it smells like a gerbil. I got mine to switch that way. Good thing my gerbil is such a good sport.
