hey, i have really been thinking on geting a burm. I was wodering what you think. I want to get a male. but, im not 100 percent im shure i can handle a giant. i figure by the time he is big enough to do some real damage to me, i will know the snake good enough. im just still kinda iffy if i can handle 95 pounds of snake. if i get one, it will be a hachling. so i figure i got awile befor its 95 pounds. (i know it will reach its full length befor that)

but i just would like your opinians on this subject. i mean i love burms, they are my favorite snake by far (yes, even mor that boas!!!)

I am not trying to be harsh in anyway here I am just trying to give you good advice. If you are having any doubts about whether you are ready yet than you should probably wait and gain more experience. I do not know what you have had in the past or presently but you could move up in stages. If you truely have a a passion for this hobbby then no snake will bore you and you will learn much from each species you keep. Todd

Man todd we are just on the same page tonight. I agree again, the only thing concerning me is the fact that you said you don't know if your ready to handle a giant. Even though everyone will say a burm is the best giant to start with, it's still going to be a very large predator and if not handle enough a nasty one. Give us some more info on your backround and we could help more. As for me I was no expert, pro or even close to one when I got my burms, but I knew i was ready, I knew my info, had room and everything needed. Just give us more info and we will do the same ~Matt

thanks for the help im not as new as i sound, i have been catching garters, and black snakes seince i can rember. but ive only owned 2 constricters, a ball, and a boa. lol im just wondering what i should do.i have a dresser, that i would gut out, and make a cage out of. im not in a hurry to get one, and want to be properly set up befor he gets here. also, its not good to put a little snake in a huge cage right? so i know i would have the big cage done way before he actually needed it.

thanks savvgawd

It seems like you have got some experience. The next step would be to figure out if you have the time and the money.

Figure your going to be feeding a fuzzy rat or two for the next 6 months. Then a full sized rat or two for the next 6 months. Then a rabbit a week for the next six months. Then 2 or 3 rabbits every 2 weeks for the next 25 years.

Plus youll probably add about 15-20 bucks a month on your electric bill for heating and lighting.

And your gonna need a little time in there to spend handling and cleaning and such.

Better keep about 200 in there for vet bills also. Just in case something would go wrong.

Sorry, if this seems a little basic, but I think is some people actually sat down and figured all this stuff up, they may reconsider. Or just wait awhile, until they were better prepared.

I love my burms. They are beautiful animals with wonderful personalities. And there is not much greater pride in the world than watching an 18" snake, grow into a 15 foot monster.

Good Luck
