Feeding frequency and waste elimination.

vamp Jul 17, 2004 07:22 AM

I am a novice keeper. My snake is a Northern Copperhead. I know venomous are not recommended for novices, and I know the risk. I am 42 years old and don`t need a lecture. Just need an answer to my question. The snake has readily taken a prekilled mouse, 6 days ago. How long does it take for a snake to eliminate the waste after being fed? I had planned on feeding it every 7 days, or is that too frequent? I have read several different ideas on various websites and magazine articles. Should I wait for the snake to defecate before I feed it again? Thanks

Alright, I'll be the one to say it before someone else has a chance to say it in a more colorful way. If by "novice" you mean that this is your first snake (which is how it sounds from your question) and not just your frist hot snake then you can expect a stream of lectures and you deserve them. Being old doesn't make it OK to do something dumb (nor do I claim to have never done anything dumb). End of lecture.

That said, we need more information to give you a useful answer. How big is the snake (approximately, please don't try to measure him)? What size mice? What temperatures are you keeping him at? How active is he?
