Strongyloids, anyone had a problem w/them?

reptichik Jul 17, 2004 08:51 AM

Hi, my dragon recently had a fecal, and of course once again, coccidia. I have been this route a few times, but also, Strongyloids showed up this time in the fecal along w/the coccidia. They are a type of pinworm or something, right? Dr. gave my Panacur to treat, 2 doses, he said this should knock the strongyloids out. The coccidia is a different story, she is on Albon for this. My question is, can strongyloids come from live prey, or greens? I am not sure how she got them, and I want to cut it off at the source. My other dragons fecal came back negative. Hmm. If anyone has any info on this parasite, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks

Well, I guess it is a good thing that I have only been handling her with vinyl gloves since I knew of the infection. I suspected that humans could get it, my vet said nothing of the sort, but hopefully the next fecal will be negative for at least the strongyloids. My son has not handled her at all, and will not until we get a negative fecal back from the dr. Thanks for the info.

Reptichik,
I think Bennett was just trying to give you a rough idea of what Strongyles are. Strongyloides stercoralis is not found in found in BDs it is found in humans although there has been one case of canine transmission. Strongyloides species are quite host specific so you do not have to worry about getting infected with these hookworm like worms. It is a different species that affects BDs than humans so relax you have nothing to worry about.
