iamjason Jul 17, 2004 01:56 PM

ive seen him twice now munching on a small twig w/ no leaves that sticks out from the ficus

ive also seen him chewing on a dead crunchy leaf that he was holding in his "hands"

anyone else see anything like this with their panthers? is this more common than i thought? anyone try to feed fruits or veggies to their panthers?

Its fairly normal for the chameleons to chew on their plants. My veileds gnaw on their pothos all the time. It might just be he's trying new things.

Just my 2 cents!

There is an old chameleon book out there, the title And author escape me right now although I believe one of the author's last name was Wolf and I believe he was a well known photographer. Anyway the book has A chapter on Panther chameleons and goes into a lot of the malagassy folk-lore behind them. One the things mentioned about them according to the people there is that they supposedly eat the berries of the Lantana bush(Lantana camera) which is referred to by the locals as the "chameleon banana". The author mentions how this is interesting considering that the lantana bush is not historically indegenous to Madagascar and is also toxic. I always remembered this little factoid and considered putting lantana in with my Panthers in the past as it is a common weed where I live(central Fla.) From what I have since heard from local cattle farmers I would now longer try this. According to them, lantan causes the skin to fall off of cattle when they eat lantana and can ultimately kill them. While chameleons are not cattle I figure this is an experiment for someone else to try. As far as other vegetation goes I have never seen signs of panthers in my care consuming any and I house mine with guava trees which are quite edible. They don't even eat my cattleya orchids which I plant in their cages and those actually cost money which inevitably makes them tasty to most everything.
