How long can mice go without water? (Please answer by Sunday 9am EST)

Amanda E Jul 17, 2004 02:25 PM

I'm going to be getting some mice tomorrow, and they will be without water from 10am till 4pm.

Will they be okay? Or do they really need a source of water for this long of a time period?

It's best to provide a water source, but it does not have to be water in its liquid form. They should do just fine if you give them a couple chunks of potatoes, pieces of carrots, apples, grapes, etc. Personally I'd choose the potato as it is less likely to cause diarrhea than other vegetables or fruits (assuming the mice are not accustomed to this in their diets.)

Hope this helps...

So it depends on the heat. We freeze 20oz water bottles and put them in with the mice. The mice lick the sweat and it helps keep them cool.

6 hours is a long time for mice to be without water or food. Read somewhere that mice can starve to death in 7 hours. I recommend getting a small tupperware container with shavings, water and feed bowl and keep the mice in there (just drill holes on the lid for ventilation) till you can bring them home.

Well, I got my mice and they did fine.

I did go ahead and give them a bowl of water and a few blocks of food while I was out.
