Looking for a little help on Mites....

triniian Jul 17, 2004 03:48 PM

My Guyana BCC has contracted those oh so dreadful MITES.

I would like to know everything on these little guys so that I may have the best chance of ridding them completely.

Currently the housing of my young friend is very tropical with moss and mostly mulch/bark bedding, there are also lots of branches etc.

Are there GOOD websites any of you know to aid me in my research? Any tips to sterilize the living environments?

Currently I am applying 'Reptile Relief' every 3 days as per the directions.

I don't want to waste any time so an url would be more than sufficient.

Thank you for the assistance...

Hi, I to was unfortunate enough as to have my boas infected by those darn blood suckers but their is help!!This is how I killed those little devils.

First I cleaned their cages very well with novalsan, I then replaced the substrate and treated it with Provent-a-mite per the directions and finally I treated my boas with reptile relief. I did this every 5 days and my boas are now mite free!! As a proventative
measure I continue to spray their substrate with provent-a-mite every time I clean their cages and I treat the boas themselves with reptile relief once every two weeks. Hope this helps!!

An excellent website and now a proven regimen! I am attacking those devils already... thank you both.

I cleared out my 2" of substrates which are perfect humidity and temp for breeding mites and there were SOOO MANY of them!!!!!

I soaked my BCC and Brazilian Rainbow for 3 hours today to clear all mites from them. I threw out all substrates. Anything associated with snakes in my house has been soaking in a bleach solution (will go overnight)

I cleaned their tanks with bleach then windex (then wiped them clean with water only), let them air out for an hour and now am using a 'Repticarpet' with only a hide and a water bowl for the next few weeks. I coated their housing with 'Reptile Relief' for an added measure of security.

The great thing about the carpet substrates is that I can wash them everyday while I soak the hide, waterbowl, and snakes for the next week or so to make sure I got all of those ravenous critters.

------------------------------------------------------

Now the next PROBLEM. The room they are kept in is carpeted. My BP is kept in his enclosure about 30 feet away. Is it likely he will get mites too? I inspected his cage thoroughly and didn't find anything. It will be a pain to thoroughly clean his 5' x 3' x 2' custom built cabinet enclosure!!! I don't know how I should approach this one just yet! Any suggestions?

Thanks...
