Mexican Spiloties breeding success...sort of

TomD Jul 17, 2004 04:12 PM

Yeah! I finally did it. I have been working with these guys for years and it finally worked. I received a pair of mex tiger babies from Dick Bartlett about four years ago. Last year they laid some slugs but this year it was a nice clutch that hatched into six healthy babies. Unfortunately they are all males. Hopefully there will be more variety next year.
The mexican subspecies of spiloties always has the double banding, light yellow and orange yellow.

6 male in 6 eggs is not random... I think there is some correlation between sex and incubation temp. in some snakes too...

About E.taeniura ridley R.Fesser write:" Between 26 and 27,5 °C I had almost all males. At incubation temp. of 29 °C in 22 eggs I had 14 females..."
I've the original copy of the german article...

And then I remember when I was looking for a pair of E.radiata.
I went in the reptile shop, where 20 babies (or more!) were to sell.
In 20 babies... only a female !!!
It could not be a simple fortuite case...!

P.S. In the health forum I've posted a question about broken ribs in my S.pullatus female who laid her eggs in unclean soil...

Thanks for the suggestion. I have not seen much about sex determination by temp outside of turtles and crocodilians. My Gonyosoma eggs have to hatch at a lower temp (80) or they don't hatch at all. These were all incubated at about 84.
