Pits on alligator scutes

aam Jun 21, 2003 07:56 PM

Two of us are currently investigating pathologies in the scutes of ankylosaurian dinosaurs. As part of our background research, we are looking at pathologies in modern reptiles.

Recently we have heard of an alligator that was infected with Oestridae flies (warble flies) that eventually ate through to the vertebra. The alligator died and was disposed of before we could see the infections.

We are presuming that the keratin on crocodiles is similar to that of ankylosaurs.

Has anyone in this forum seen crocodiles or alligators infected by biting insects?

I see that you did not post on the crocodilian forum. There are people who post there who are very knowledgeable but do not visit this forum. I suggest that you go there, good luck.
