Florida Kingsnake?

newherpaddict Jul 17, 2004 08:11 PM

I am not a kingsnake person and have never owned one. The only snakes I keep are Green Tree Pythons and Western Hognoses. I work in the education department at the philadelphia zoo. We have a gorgeous snake that I love and I am told she is a florida kingsnake. She is green and yellow speckled all over the place and absolutley beautiful, but howcome I see pics of florida kings they are like black. Sorry if this a stupid question but I don't keep kingsnakes. Any info on these snakes would be awesome! Thanks in advance!!!

Can you post a pic? It might be a Florida Kingsnake, but your description sounds more like a Speckled Kingsnake or a Desert Kingsnake. Another possibility is the Outer Banks Kingsnake, a variant of the Eastern Kingsnake.

Look through the posts in the threads below regarding Florida/Brooksi Kings; there are quite a few pics showing the variety of coloration and pattern. Also, go to the Photo Gallery > Snakes > Kingsnakes and you may well find something similar to the one you've described.

I don't have a pic but it looks like some of the others I have seen just without the saddles.

It looks like this but kinda greener and darker and there are no markings except for the speckling.

Sounds like a Speckled Kingsnake to me. Might it look like this?

Where the black is, it is dark green

....some of my floridas as being "greenish" for sure.
This one shows some of that "greenish" tone.

The average South Florida (intergrade) King you find south of lake Okeechobee looks greenish. They get consistantly darker the closer you get to Chain King ( L.g. getula) range. Your description sounds like that is what you have.

Sounds like someone who knows about brooks kings and splendida should go and take a look so we know for sure. Anyone in the area?
