Food Alternative (My last question today I promise...sorta)

AaronFromPA Jul 17, 2004 11:48 PM

Alright a question on food. Due to my location and not being many pet stores around are there serious disadvantages to the canned food that is available? I am curious because live crickets/mealies and the like may not be readily available to me unless I took on the chore of breeding/keeping them. Does anyone have any idea about products such as ZooMeds Leopard Gecko food or the aptly named can o crickets?

There's a good processed food called Gecko Bites or try buying meal worms from a bait store. Otherwise you can buy crickets online in quantities of 200 or more. Hope this helps.

How about a "bait shop"? There are several stores that sell live fishing bait near here. They all sell crickets, and most carry meal worms and wax worms...

That is a dang fine point. I live in a hick town and there is no shortage of bait shops. Guess I will try that as an option. Thank you both.

LLL has 1000 mealworms shipped to your door for 12.95. If you keep them in the fridge they'll last a while too... just an option.

Is there any trouble with feeding a leo only mealworms? I only ask because a book I read said this was not a good alternative. Also how long would these last?

mealworms are a great staple diet. Many breeders use only mealworms for all of their leos without problem. I would if I could convince my leos to not like crickets... I have a few that won't even look at the mealworms. Mine stay good in the fridge for about a week or two (maybe longer... but mine are all gone by then). Just make sure you gutload them.
