WC Kingsnake from Goleta, CA

georgio Jun 21, 2003 08:31 PM

I caught a roughly 5' Cali Kingsnake on a beach near a resort/golf course in Goleta, CA. The beach is fairly popular and is considered a "dog beach" and I knew if he made his way to the resort grounds the gardeners would kill him. He had a puncture wound about 10 inches down his body from his head either from someone trying to kill him or a dog I assume. It looked like a piece of wood sticking out of him but turned out to just be a really dirty protruding scab. After consulting with my herp vet I removed the scab and cleaned the wound with a dilute betadine solution and followed with a treatment of silvadene. That was 4 days ago. Since then he has eaten a mouse and his wound looks great. I am planning on releasing him about a mile away from where I caught him in a more secluded area in about a week. I will post some pictures once I get photoshop reinstalled on my computer. They sure are wonderful snakes!

awsome!!! a few days ago i rescued a pacific garter from a robin the other day . it was like a quick instance . i saw a bird had something dangling from its feet , it flew a few feet away then i saw , it was a baby snake , so i shewed away the bird .the snake was ok , no cuts , so i let it go. im not to much into breaking the food chain but birds have alot more to eat than baby snakes.
