Humidity levels problem

gavinclews Jul 18, 2004 11:19 AM

Does anyone have any ideas on how to get the humidity levels up in my incubator? It is quite a big incubator with a water tray in the bottom but at 81 to 84 i cant get any higher than 50 humidity. I cant add water to my virmiculite as my eggs will get too wet.Any ideas?

you can add water to the vermiculate if you pour it around the edges and dont let the water directly contact the egg.

I dont think i do have a good seal. I am using an old chicken incubator. All it is , is a bo with a water tray in the bottom, then a grill on top what the eggs go on and a plastic dome lid that just fits ontop. It cant be well sealed. do you think if i seal it with some tape it might be better??it needs some sort of hole in it or no air will get in.

If you seal it with tape will you able able to open it when you need to? It should not be air tight but close to it. The less air flow the more humid it will be.

Well if i do tape it i shouldnt really be messing with them all the time anyway. I will only need to go in every so often. Just how big should my eggs be at 5 weeks old anyway. They havent grown that much but i dont know how big they should be anyway.

size varies greatly, nothing is set in stone. They can nearly doube in size over 2 months however. If you have more babies you will be going in again as well as removing any eggs that turn bad. I check all my eggs frequently depending on how many are in the incubator at any given time.

If you have the eggs in a deli cup or something that seals, with a few small air holes, the humidity can be achieved within the container. Just make sure there are enough air holes to not suffocate the eggs.
