My stupid pill bugs are dying

chunks_89 Jul 18, 2004 12:24 PM

ARG i spent all that time seting up the pill bugs and im finding dead ones everywhere. They are the larger of the bugs I had put in...perhaps it's the end of their lives. The humidity is super-high, with all the compost and rotting wood etc. and there is very little ventilation. I also mist them once a day or so an almost slways see condensation on the sides of the container. The rest of the inhabitants of the container seem quite happy...as far as I know...

You didn't mention where you got your pillbugs from. Maybe you did in an earlier post, I'm too lazy to look back this morning, but anyways....
If you're field collecting them, could be that they're contaminated with pesticides. Maybe it's the soil you're using that's contaminated. I dunno. May want to double check your sources, make sure you're not using contaminated material.
Like I said, just a thought.

Thanks for your input, but no I don't believe theyve been in contact with pesticides. There is a pesticide-sensitive person a few doors down who talked to the city and made a block-wide ban on the stuff.
The compost, like I said, has been there for a year or two and is quite soil-like. The only things we put in our compost are food by-products like apple cores, eggshells, melon rinds etc. and of course, leaves (even the oak leaves we throw in from the huge oak tree in the backyard were nearly 100% decomposed...).

again, thanks for your input
