My toad prefers live food. I wasted money on a can of dead crickets when they didnt have live ones.. she wanted nothin to do with em =P she will eat mealworms, hates earthworms/red "wigglers", but I started feeding live crickets and those seem to be a real favorite now. Theyre cheap and fairly easy to maintain, you just need to keep a damp sponge and some cricket food with them (I get T rex calcium feeder) Youll definately want the small ones if its a tiny toad!

When my american toads were toadlets I fed them fruit flies, small leaf hoppers, pinhead crickets, small earthworms and other small bugs. Basically, anything that is alive and that will fit into their mouth, they will eat. If my toad doesn't like something he has eaten he spits it out right away.
Be sure to feed a variety- first year's nutrition is the most important, so I have heard. I have also heard that lightning bugs (fireflies) and ladybugs can be poisonious if eaten in excess, so avoid those. Oh, and spiders are also delectable to toads. Some people have claimed that their toad will eat canned catfood although I have not tried this.. I somewhat remember the discussion, saying that catfood doesn't have enough of the nutrition toads need.

Wow! I just got on here to ask if anyone had ever seen one that small before! My hubby found ours a wk ago and he's living w/ our two larger nickle-sized toads. He's been eating 10 day olds (crickets) and loves to sit on top of the larger ones. I've even seen him peeking out from under one like a baby penguin!

Sprig - Head Keeper of the Mellen Menagerie: 1 cat, 3 garter snakes, 1 ribbon snake, 3 juvenile red-eared sliders, 4 land snails, 2 tiny Northern chorus frogs, 2 little toads, 1 miniscule toad... & a partridge in a pear tree!
(Just kidding about the bird! But I DO have a hubby, a 9 yr old boy and a 3 yr old girl in the mix!)
