1000 gram female breeding . why?

jimfmcdonald Jul 18, 2004 01:42 PM

I put what was supposed to be to females together and now they are breeding ! the female is just less then 1,000 grams. is her size going to be a problem? if she will become gravid, or will they just breed when the female is not even going to produce eggs? I do have females that are 1400 plus grams that I plan to breed for the first time next season. this female was not cooled down or anything, it just happened ! what do you think?

I know it isn't good to breed them when they are small, can sometimes cause egg bound snakes and other kinds of problems. Put them in separate cages ASAP!

guess this is another reason on why keeping snakes together can be bad. I am always 50/50 on putting snakes in the same cage, my friend put snakes together all the time for years and had no problems, but I keep mine 1 per cage.

the bigger one is the female. so will they just breed for nothing or does this mean shes going to produce eggs?

first time breeding the balls. thanks.

it may or may not take on the first time. just get them in different cages quick so they can't breed again.

let's see what some others who have more experience say...

Most of my experience is with colubrids. I have never bred balls.

I was told in a conversation with 1 of the big breeders that balls are easy to breed...they will breed alost anytime of the year...cooling down is not necessarily needed.

In my expereince it is not always size that matters in breeding...age has alot to do with it...100 gtram animal is not a small animal and maybe able to breed and lay viable eggs. Also I DO NOT believe that egg binding has alot to do with size...I think it has to do with internal genetics and damage to the inside for any reason...I hate to handle gravid snakes...I do it as little as possible.

They are not both girls. They are a sexual pair. They breed all year, whether it takes or not. It may not take,it's the wrong time of the year. BUT she could hold sperm according to other people's findings and thoughts.

As said, get them apart and they won't breed again. But IF she does get gravid, the eggs may be few,or littler than normal ,or not take at all ,and be duds. Anything can happen.

How old is she? People on here are always like someone breaks the law if they breed females at 1000 grams or even 1400 grams but there is such a thing as I guess you u would call them "midget" ball pythons...Just as in there are in humans and every other animal, their are ball pythons that are just genetically small...Yea, a 1000 grams isn't that much but if she is 4-5 yrs. old than that's probably around her max size...I know of few people that have balls in there care that are 1100-1300 gram females and are 5 yrs. old and the breed them and they lay with no problem...Now their clutches aren't huge but they give out around 3 totally good eggs each yr...

she is only 18 months old. but has been eating great and putting on allot of grams. I did not mean for her to breed yet but it happend and now I just want to know if it will be a problem or not and if I should be ready for her to lay eggs in a month or if she might become gravid at any time now and I should just keep a close eye out for her to look gravid. and I suppose I should feed her all she wants so she will grow as much as possible before she does lay. thanks for all the help !
