Hello all,
On Friday I was in my snake room when I saw a little neonate shorthead garter squirming around in-between a rock and the waterbowl, I figured it was just stuck so I went to help it out. Little did I know, I have another snake in my collection that eats other snakes, he did it before and didn't get caught, but I saw him this time, and no it wasn't my scarlet king. An adult male northern ringneck snake, I've had it since like the beginning of June, it was the 1st ringneck I cuaght this year, awesome snake, about 14 inches long(never really measured it). It was gonna be traded off last week but I decided to hang on to breed to Giant and try and get another clutch out of her. Since the snake was in my possession he never really ate anything, except for one F/T nightcrawler around the end of June. Never really paid much attention to the males, you tend to worry more about the gravid females instead. Well back to the story, I saw the little snake squirming around and all, and looked in the tank to see the ringneck clamped around it's neck! I did not expect that to happen at all, most northern ringnecks tend to only eat worms and salamanders, although I had 2 that would take snakes.
Like I said, this is the 2nd time it ate one of my neonate snakes, I found a neonate shorthead garter the other day and took it home for it to be scarlet king food, well I put it in with the northern thinking it wouldn't mind, lol it obviously didn't, the little snake disappeared just as fast as it arrived. I figured it escaped, but a little 3 inch snake can't really climb out of a 10 gallon tank can it? No.
I got pics of the ringneck eating the shorthead, which took alot longer than I thought it would, about half an hour before he got the little snake down.
In other news, on Friday evening, I happened to come across a 4 inch slimy salamander, and since Giant seemed to be refusing everything else, I figured I might as well try it. I threw the salamander into Giant's tank while she was drinking water, lol she saw it and chased it under a rock, I lifted up the rock and poked it and it ran right into her, she began constricting it and had a tight grip on it's head/neck area. Awesome thing to watch, about 5 minutes later the salamander died and Giant began eating it. I got pics of all that chaos too.
lol wow, sorry for all the words, I got carried away.
