gravid female....again

ktmartin Jul 18, 2004 03:58 PM

my female beardie is gravid again....last time all 22 eggs bad....what should i do? she is digging holes all over the cage, so should i put her in a nest box outside of the aquarium or should i put one in it with the male? last time i put a tupperware dish in there with vermiculite and she spread them all over the place....i have a 40 gallon tank not in use, would it be ok to slope the vermiculite in that and seperate her from the male??? any info is greatly appreciated....thanks!

Don't use the vermiculite for laying material... that's for incubating. Just use a soil/peat mix. Put it in a large tub with a branch or something so she can go in & out.
This year, I used a large Rubbermaid bin & used a board to section off 1/2 of it & filled that end with the dirt mix. About a foot high.
I put a basking bulb over the dirt end & she seemed to like that better than putting a tub in the cage. It was easier for me too.

Good luck.

thanks for the reply.....got another question for ya though... how long does she need to be in there and how do i know when it is the right time???? thanks a million!!!

They can do the compulsive digging for a couple days before they lay. Most the time they stop eating too, but that's a case by case issue.
When I know she is gravid & I know she is acting like it's time, I leave her in the big bin until she lays. Still offer food inside & make sure temp. requirements are met though.
If he digs for over a week, then she may be egg bound & that requires a Vet visit.

Good luck.
