How are silkworms for Bearded Dragons?

MWHS Jul 18, 2004 06:52 PM

Just curious how well they take them, I know some lizards don't eat them because they don't move enough. Please share your experiences!

My beardie LOVES them. If they weren't so expensive I'd use silkies instead of crickets, no doubt about it.

I have a little beardie, about 10 inches from her head to the tip of tail, and she won't eat them. I ordered 100 of them, and have tried EVERYTHING to get her interested, but she just looks at me as if I'm crazy to think she would eat such a creature! I wish she would eat them though, because they are much easier to deal with than crickets, and they have NO SMELL! I haven't had any trouble keeping them either - just feed them mulberry leaves and have them in an open rubbermaid container. They spend their life just sitting there, waiting for food! They don't even try to escape! Oh, what a good life it would be, if my little one wasn't so picky...

Silkies are expensive but if you can afford them they are the best for your dragon. I would order about 50 to start and see if she will take them. My girl seems to love them so far though you are right about the moving. If they do not move she tends to ignore them.

So the plus side is that they are healthy for you dragon, easy to care for, dont smell. The negative is that dragons perfer to hunt and run for meals so may ignore a silkworm that just sits there.

Here is a link to a silkworm site that I use and though I am just starting out with using them they are the least expensive I have found so far and have fast delivery.

My Beardie loves them. I really don't think she likes hunting down her food. She will hit the bowl first, then find the crickets. (I now feed her veggies and silk worms in the morning and crix in the afternoon.) She will always check the bowl first! sometimes, she will even stand in the bowl looking at me, while the crix are jumping around her. Funny.

I too order from California Silkworms. I haven't had any problems with them. I love to raise them. I have raised crix and silkies....SILKIES Rule!!! As far as money goes.... they are not that much more expensive becasue you feed less worms than you would crickets. I spent $15 on 100 and they lasted about 2-3 weeks (I only feed 4-7 per day). You have a lot less casualties. I think the money evens out. I used to spend that much per month with crikets (not to mention the amount of GutLoad and Crix chow).

Superworms are good too (not as nutritous as silkies...more so than crix and easier to raise than crix as well as being about the same in price).
